Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon showcased a period drama makeover for his role in the new series, My Lady Jane.

The Prime Video show serves as a "radical" retelling of English royal history, in which the narrative is changed after King Edward VI (Jordan Peters) doesn't die at the age of 15, meaning Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is spared the executioner's axe.

The trailer begins in anarchic fashion, with a narrator saying: "History remembers Jane as the ultimate damsel in distress, known for her death rather than her life. F**k that, what if history were different?"

The rest of the trailer shows Jane falling in love with Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel), with his scheming and playful father (Brydon) planning to plant Jane on the throne for his own good.

Despite wishing to pursue her own tale of "true love and high adventure", Jane finds herself a target for a crew of "nefarious villains", who are coming for her head as well as the pristine crown.

"Gird your loins for the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded in 1553…" reads the logline.

"F*ck that. We're retelling history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy. Buckle up."

In addition to the aforementioned cast members, the roster also includes Anna Chancellor, Dominic Cooper, Jim Broadbent and Will Keen, with the quartet playing Lady Frances Grey, Lord Seymour, the Duke of Leicester and the Duke of Norfolk, respectively.

The eight-part series, based on Brodi Ashton's collection of novels, has been created by Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn, with the pair serving as executive producers alongside Laurie MacDonald and Sarah Bradshaw.

My Lady Jane premieres on Prime Video on June 27.
