Gaston County middle school student collapses on bus, passes away: Police

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Holbrook Middle School community in Lowell is in mourning following the sudden loss of one of their students on Thursday.

Authorities said a middle school student was found unresponsive on a school bus as the vehicle arrived at school on Thursday morning, Feb. 29.

A Lowell Police School Resource Officer working at the school attempted life-saving efforts on the child before they were rushed to Caromont Regional Medical Center.

“One of the tools officers utilize when confronted with unresponsive individuals is Narcan. In this incident, Narcan was administered to the juvenile, just in case there was some type of exposure to any narcotics. The Narcan did not have any effect on the juvenile, indicating this was not likely a drug overdose,” Lowell and Gaston County Police explained on Thursday.

The Gaston County Police Criminal Investigations Unit is assisting Lowell Police in determining what occurred leading up to the child’s death.

“While we are awaiting final results from the Medical Examiner, it appears the child suffered from a medical condition,” authorities said.

At this point, police do not expect any charges to be filed.
