Gas prices up in Champaign Co. for 4th straight week, GasBuddy says

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Gas prices are going up in Champaign County and last week brought another increase, new data shows.

GasBuddy looked at 79 stations across the county and found the average price of gas on Monday is $3.63 per gallon, a rise of 19 cents compared to one week prior. That price is 36 cents higher than it was one month ago and about the same as it was one year ago.

The rise in gas prices in Champaign County echoes a rise in prices nationwide, albeit at a slower rate. The national average rose by six cents over the last week, and it now stands at $3.51 per gallon. The national average was 27 cents lower one month ago and nine cents lower one year ago.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said a rise in gas prices isn’t uncommon at this time of year. What is uncommon is the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the attacks on Russian oil refineries and the impacts of those attacks on the oil industry.

“Russia could see more capacity impacted by the attacks, forcing it to buy such products on the global market, pushing prices up everywhere,” De Haan explained. “With oil prices now under more pressure and attacks potentially increasing on Russian refiners, we could be in for a few more weeks of rising prices. Significant as well is the fact that Americans are now seeing inflation again at the pump with prices higher than they were a year ago.”

The price of gas in Champaign County ranges between $3.46 and $3.79, the data shows. That compares to a range of $3.15 and $5.19 across the State of Illinois, with an average of $3.89.
