A gas leak in the South Overton neighborhood has promoted evacuations as of Wednesday afternoon, with the city asking citizens to avoid the area.

According to Lubbock Fire Rescue, residents at the Mecca Apartments on Avenue R, CenterPoint Apartments on 16th Street, and a residence on 16th Street have been evacuated as of 4 p.m.

LFR advises citizens to avoid the following areas:

  • Avenue R from 15th Street to 17th Street.

  • Avenue S from 15th Street to 17th Street.

  • 16th Street from Avenue S to Avenue Q.
