Garfield Heights police chase ends in crash involving 2 juveniles, stolen vehicle

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – One man and two juveniles were arrested after a police chase led to a crash in a stolen vehicle Thursday evening.

According to a press release from the Garfield Heights Police Department, an officer spotted a white Kia Sportage heading south on Turney Roadnear Havana Road with what appeared to be three young men inside, all wearing face masks just before 7:20 p.m.

According to the release, the officer ran a registration check on the vehicle, which said it was stolen out of Cleveland.

Other officers also arrived at the area and spotted the vehicle, which was heading toward them. The suspects inside the stolen vehicle saw the police car and turned down York Boulevard at a high speed, police say.

That is when the officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and began a chase.

After a pursuit down several roads, the vehicle turned on Granger Road with speeds hitting around 65 mph.

Eventually, the chase made its way past Dunham Rd, with speeds around 80 mph.

As the vehicle approached Lee Rd., the light at the intersection was red. The stolen vehicle did not stop and hit a white Kia Optima and then crashed into an RTA bus stop, the report says.

The driver of the stolen vehicle got out and fled on foot. After being ordered to get on the ground, he eventually stopped running and was taken into custody, according to police.

Two passengers, including a man later identified as Jamarez Andrews, were also taken into custody.

The victims who were inside the Kia Optima were taken to the hospital by EMS. It is unclear at this time how many people were inside that vehicle and the severity of their injuries.

All three suspects were also taken to the hospital for minor injuries, according to the release.

One of the suspects told police he had a gun in his pocket that went off and shot him in the leg during the pursuit. According to the release, the gun that was found was never fired and EMS said the suspect did not appear to have a gunshot wound.

According to the release, the stolen vehicle later caught on fire, which was put out by the fire department.

During the search for the vehicle, a Smith and Wesson .38 special revolver was found, as well as two cell phones and black face masks.

It was determined that the gun was stolen out of Twinsburg, according to the release

It was later found that one of the suspects was on probation through Summit County for possessing a firearm.

One suspect was turned over to juvenile intake. The second was released to his mother and set to be charged at a later date. Andrews was booked into the city jail for receiving stolen property, according to the release.
