When you think about who is playing the BEST game on Game of Thrones, the names Dany, Tyrion, and Cersei spring to mind (and after this past season, Sansa has definitely joined those scheming ranks). But, there might be another character we have to think about, when it comes to the “great game.” Maybe we should be paying more attention to Varys.

He’s part of Dany’s #MeereenSquad, by way of Tyrion. We know that Tyrion and he are basically like, BFFs, with their witty back-and-forth walk-and-talk banter. There’s also a dark side to Varys, too, since he is a spy master, and those “little birds” from the finale (omg, remember those little birds?) are all his. It’s not like we’re going to see him suddenly start destroying everything on the show, since he doesn’t work like that. He works in secret back channels and whispers, and he might actually be pulling way more strings than we realize.

In a theory from Reddit user gmnitsua, they believe that Varys has had a much BIGGER plan all along, and slowly the pieces are falling into place. After rewatching Tyrion’s trial after the death of Joffrey, it struck gmnitsua as odd that Varys first befriends Tyrion, and then testifies against him.

He wanted Tyrion to be found guilty. And why? He wanted to give him to Daenerys,” gmnitsua writes. “He conspired with Jaime to free him. He organized his passage to Daenerys. And he got abducted by whom? Jorah Mormont. A person who conspired with Varys from the very beginning. Deliberate or no? Definitely convenient. I don’t think anything accidentally happens to Varys. It’s all part of the Spider’s web.

IT MAKES SENSE. In the season finale, we saw Tyrion swear his complete alliance to Dany, and then she made him the Hand of the Queen. It’s possible that Varys KNEW this would happen all along, and he KNEW this would be the best outcome for the two of them — and quite possibly for Westeros.

And then remember his ~super secret~ mission that SURPRISE had Varys show up in Dorne, just as the Martells and Tyrells were joining forces? His scheming is clearly not over just yet, which means out of everyone hanging out in the shadows, we need to focus in on him a whole lot more.
