‘Game over’: Climate change could be even worse than predicted - with a 7-degree rise by 2100

If the world does not stop burning fossil fuels, climate change could be far, far worse than predicted – with a catastrophic rise of up to 7 degrees Celsius by 2100, according to The Independent.

Measures to limit the use of fossil fuels may be under threat – as Donald Trump has said he aims to scrap regulations on carbon dioxide emissions.

Previous ‘worst case’ scenarios – for if the world continues to use fossil fuels – suggested a rise of up to 4.8C by 2100, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

But a new paper published in the journal Science Advances, suggested the actual range could be between 4.78C to 7.36C by 2100, based on one set of calculations – due to the climate being more sensitive to greenhouse gases when it’s warmer.

The analysis is based on data from the past 800,000 years.

Professor Michael Mann, of Penn State University in the US, told The Independent the new paper appeared to be ‘sound and the conclusions quite defensible’

‘And it does indeed provide support for the notion that a Donald Trump presidency could be game over for the climate.’
