Future Farmers of America helping fortify Berkeley County Meals on Wheels, Martinsburg rescue mission

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. (DC News Now) — Hedgesville sits in the heart of the Mountain State’s booming eastern panhandle where there is a critical need to feed the hungry.

A local chapter of Future Farmers for America is stepping up to meet the needs at Berkeley County’s Meals on Wheels and the Rescue Mission in Martinsburg.

Along with his high school classroom studies, Lucas Dunham spends time growing vegetables as a Future Farmer for America. He donates his crops to help the hungry.

“We’re growing potatoes, carrots, onions and we’re going to donate all these vegetables to Meals on Wheels to give back,” Dunham said. “So this way, the people struggling in this community — we can help them.”

When not focused on her assignments at Hedgesville High School and nearby Rumsey Technical College, Kasey Payne is passionate about community service.

“The community has always given to us and we want to give back to them,” Payne said. “They are always needing vegetables and meals for the people that they serve and we are just so grateful that we are able to help them out.”

Eli Canby will be enrolling at Blue Ridge Community College after high school graduation and, along with helping top feed the hungry, he sees his FFA experience helping to build a livelihood for himself.

“You get to learn about agriculture and how it is beneficial,” Canby said. “We also do AG mechanics and agribusiness and you can see how to run a farm or agribusiness through agriculture.”

Dianne Waldron with Berkeley County Meals on Wheels says the students’ help will be impactful.

“Not just for the food deliveries,” Waldron said. “Our knock on the door serves as something of a welfare check in the community. For many homebound seniors this is not only their only meal for the day, but the only contact with another person.”
