Funeral plans set for New Mexico State Police officer allegedly killed by Marion man

MARION COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A public funeral and remembrance ceremony is planned next week in Albuquerque for New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare, who was reportedly shot along Interstate 40 last week by a Marion man.

Justin Hare’s services begin at 1 p.m. EST on March 27 at Legacy Church located at 7201 Central Ave. NW in the city, the agency announced Monday on its Facebook page.

It’s open to the public. Anyone wanting to donate flowers can do so by sending them to Daniel’s Family Funeral Services, 4310 Sara Rd Rio Rancho, NM 87124.

Hare died last Friday hours after being shot multiple times by a man authorities identified as 32-year-old Jeramy Smith of Marion.

Smith remains hospitalized in unknown condition at an Albuquerque-area hospital after being shot by Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies following a brief foot chase on Sunday.

He’s been charged with Hare’s murder. Smith is also a person of interest in the death of Pee Dee paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore. The 52-year-old’s body was discovered last week in a remote area of Dillon County.

Smith was driving Machado-Fore’s white BMW when he shot Hare, police said.

News13 reported on Monday that Smith has an extensive arrest record spanning 15 years. He’s currently not facing any charges in connection with Machado-Fore’s disappearance or death.
