After fundraiser canceled amid pro-Palestine protests, charity looks to bounce back

DENVER (KDVR) — A nationwide charity canceled its biggest Colorado fundraiser of the year amid a pro-Palestinian solidarity encampment on the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver.

“We had concerns for safety with the protesters over there,” said Gayle Lettenmaier, media chair of the Colorado affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. “So we canceled it to make sure that we could remain safe.”

PanCan was set to host its Purple Stride 5K/1K Walk on Saturday in the Tivoli Quad section of the campus. Lettenmaier said more than 1,000 people had registered for the event.

Money raised goes to research and patient services.

An estimated 66,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year in the U.S., according to Lettenmaier.

The organization still hopes to host an appreciation picnic later this summer to “celebrate each other and what we’re going through.”
