Fun Day dedicated to Wiggs memory

Mar. 11—Spring is right around the corner. Get ready for Spring with the 9th Annual Barbara Wiggs Fun Day in the Park set for Saturday, March 16.

The Roxie Douglas Learning Institute will kick off the event at 10 a.m. at the M.L.K Community Center, 310 M.L.K Blvd. The activities will continue until 2 p.m.

Barbara Wiggs was a teacher at the Roxie Douglas Learning Institute. She was also in charge of the entertainment for all the Institute's events.

"She had several dance groups, such as the Step Angels, and she taught dance for the youth during the Central District Association Sessions," said Roxie Douglas Learning Institute director Carmen Irving.

Barbara organized the Fun Day in the Park, but the day the event was supposed to happen it rained and the date changed.

"She died before she could see the fruit of her labor. We have continued her dream in her honor," Irving said.

Irving invites the public to help make this a day to remember.

"We are asking the parents to bring their children out to enjoy a day of games, delicious food, and to receive an Easter basket," said Yolanda Scott.

There will be a live DJ providing music for the day. Each child present will get a free Easter Basket stuffed with eggs filled with candy, toys, and assorted treats. Organizations from around Huntsville are sponsoring tables of food, games, exhibits and treats galore.

"I keep participating in this event because we want the children of Huntsville to experience positive activities," Scott said. "that is why we sponsor this and our other events, such as the 28th Scholarship Banquet in August, the Bnard Gambrell Community Spelling Bee, the Health Fair/Walkathon, Thanksgiving Giveway, and Christmas Toy Giveaway. Our children are our future and we want to help them strive for social and academic excellence."

Wiggs is survived by her husband, Joseph Wiggs; two daughters, Amber Nicole Chatman and Glyn Tasia; granddaughter, Taliyah; sister Charlotte Carmack; brother Charles Tubbs; and mother, Ester Brown.
