Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) is recruiting Ukrainians who have illegally crossed the border into the unrecognized region of Transnistria, the National Resistance Center (NRC) reported on Mar. 2.

They are being interrogated to gather information about military facilities and the Ukrainian border with the separatist enclave. They are also regularly forced to work as freelancers and informants for the FSB, threatened with deportation to Ukraine if they refuse to cooperate.

"Such hostile actions once again demonstrate that the PMR [Transnistria] is not independent and is in fact a territory occupied by the Russian armed forces, so we urge Ukrainians not to visit the ‘republic,’ regardless of the legality of the route taken."

Deputies from the unrecognized breakaway region of Transnistria appealed to Russia’s Federation Council and State Duma, requesting “protection” for the region on Feb. 28.

They claimed this is necessary due to alleged “pressure from Moldova.” In response, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it is “carefully” considering Transnistria’s request.

Moldova does not anticipate any escalation or destabilization in the Transnistrian region, Daniel Vode, a spokesperson for the Moldovan government, said following the so-called summit.

Washington firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and is closely monitoring the situation in unrecognized Transnistria, The US State Department stated.

Earlier, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said that Kyiv advocated a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict with respect for Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On Feb. 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the situation in the Transnistrian region with his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu during the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit in Tirana, Albania.
