Friday sees rain showers return; Weekend starts gloomy but ends on a great note

THE FOLLOWING ADVISORIES/WARNINGS HAVE BEEN ISSUED:

  • Winter Weather Advisory for northwest Pocahontas County from 5 PM Friday afternoon to 1 AM Saturday morning.

Rain showers look to return later on this afternoon and overnight across both West Virginia and Virginia. While the lowlands will see scattered rain showers, it will be cold enough across the higher terrain in Pocahontas County, including the city of Snowshoe, where some mixing will occur, including a minor glaze of ice from freezing rain being possible. This can lead to some slick travel during the overnight into Saturday morning.

Friday morning starts off dry, but we’ll start to see a few clouds build during the morning. All the while, it will be a chilly start in the upper 20s, low 30s so don’t forget those cold weather jackets. It will also help to pack an umbrella later in the day because rain showers will start to move in across the area around lunchtime, becoming more scattered later in the afternoon, as temperatures get into the 40s.

Friday night sees rain showers move overhead, starting out isolated but becoming more scattered and widespread this evening and overnight. The rain we do see will be light and primarily fall as rain showers for the lowlands. As the showers move in across the higher terrain, including Pocahontas County, some mixing and light freezing rain will be possible Friday night before transitioning to rain by Saturday morning. Temperatures tonight will hover in the upper 30s, low 40s.

Saturday morning features chances for rain under mostly cloudy skies. Any more remaining showers will move off to the east, progressing to drier conditions in the afternoon. Cloud cover will gradually dwindle downward, with some peaks of sunshine for the afternoon, as we enjoy a warm up back into the 50s.

Sunday is definitely looking the better of the two weekend days with high pressure briefly building overhead. For many, you can expect partly cloudy to mostly clear skies as we end the weekend with a very warm day in the 60s!

Monday looks promising for more sunshine as we enjoy a lull in any activity. Similar premise to Sunday where Monday will feature partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies at times. Temperatures once again are staying on the warm side as the rise back into the 60s.

Tuesday morning doesn’t start off too badly as we’ll see partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 40s. We’ll continue to see the clouds build throughout the day, becoming mostly cloudy during the evening/overnight as rain chances increase across our western counties. During this time, temperatures will make it back into the 60s as rain chances build into your Wednesday.

Wednesday looks gloomy and wet at this point with scattered showers a good bet. It will stay this way through the early afternoon before we develop some breaks from the showers during the late afternoon through the overnight on Wednesday. Despite the rain showers, temperatures in the afternoon will make a run back into the 60s.

#WeatherTogether

In your extended forecast, Thursday stays consistent with more rain chances so don’t put away those rain jackets just yet. Winter weather does appear to be an afterthought as temperatures stay in the 50s under a warming trend across the area. Next weekend is trending on the dry side but we’ll continue to fine tune that as we get closer.
