Fresno-Visalia ranks in top 30 mosquito-infested cities

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – With temperatures beginning to rise across the nation, mosquito season is just on the horizon as May approaches.

According to a study conducted by Terminix, the Fresno-Visalia area ranks 27 in the top 50 mosquito-infested cities nationwide. Soon, these pests will start emerging sooner and for longer periods than in previous years.

Terminix says proper mosquito control is vital to sustaining a safe and healthy environment for communities as they can spread harmful diseases like West Nile virus and Zika virus.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states cases of West Nile virus reported tripled in the U.S. from 2020 to 2021.

To help the public “fight the bite,” scientists at Terminix recommend the public following these practical tips:

  • Defend- Using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Repellents should contain more than 20% of DEET; the higher the percentage, the longer it will last. Avoid peak mosquito biting hours— depending on the area it can range from dusk to dawn or during the day.

  • Dress- Wearing lighter clothes can help prevent mosquito bites as these pests are less attracted to lighter colors. Long sleeves and long socks are recommended near water and heavily wooded areas. Applying repellants on top of clothing can also help.

  • Drain- Mosquitos can breed in just as little as one tablespoon of water so draining all forms of standing water is imperative. Make sure to regularly overturn and drain any containers, pots, or yard adornments holding stagnant water at least once weekly.

As mosquitos are prolific breeders, professional help is recommended in areas with known issues of mosquito infestation. To gain access to these resources or more information about prevention, the public can visit the Terminix website.
