Fresno opens new shady dog park at Roeding with the help of Measure P funds
The city of Fresno today held a grand opening for a new dog park that promises to make both two-legged and four-legged friends happy inside Roeding Regional Park.
With the help from Measure P funds, the city made a $762,000 investment to create 35,000 square feet of park space for small and large dogs with picnic tables, waste receptacles, drinking fountains and benches.
The original park, which was located on the west side of Roeding near its maintenance yard, had little to no shade from trees and lacked much green space.
Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias, who said he has spent about three years trying to get the project done, said many dog owners headed north to use the dog park in Woodward Park, which has more amenities and shade.
Now dog owners can take their furry friends to use Roeding Regional Park’s new dog park, which now has many of the same amenities and plenty of shady trees. The solar lighting, fire hydrant and owl figure to ward off predatory birds were moved to the new space.
“The best amenity in my view of this park is the more than 30 mature trees,” Arias said during a news conference for the park’s grand opening.
Alexia Madrigal, who brought her five dogs to the event, agreed that the shade is “just amazing“ and added “the space is the best part because when you play fetch, they can actually get a good run.”
The dog park, which also offers disability accessible parking and access, is now located near the Japanese American Memorial on the eastern end of Roeding Park.
