Fresno County libraries are giving away free solar glasses for the partial eclipse

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Free glasses are being given out by Fresno libraries for those who would like to see the eclipse occurring on April 8 -even though Fresno will only see a partial eclipse.

Library officials say a total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and completely blocks the face of the Sun.

According to NASA officials, this would be the last total solar eclipse crossing the United States for the next 20 years. This time, the Moon’s shadow will be wider and will pass over more populated areas -nearly three times as many people live within the path compared to the eclipse in 2017.

Fresno, according to public library officials, will see a partial eclipse (with a magnitude of 51%). Residents are encouraged to visit their local library to receive their free solar viewing glasses while supplies last.

County library officials say traditional eyewear like sunglasses, eyeglasses with tinted lenses, and others are not sufficient to shield an individual’s eyes during the solar eclipse, and the only way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through glasses or hand-held solar viewers manufactured to international safety standards.

The Fresno County Public Library officials say they have received eclipse glasses from the Space Science Institute, through its Solar Activities for Libraries (SEAL) program. For more information regarding the solar eclipse, click here.
