If you’re planning to snap up some fizz to celebrate Christmas and New Year, you could find the best deal at a local Spar store.

Consumer group Which? asked a panel of wine experts to blind taste test champagne and prosecco.

The top score of 83% went to the expensive Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label champagne. It sells at £40 a bottle but you can get it at £32 at Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose, according to comparison site MySupermarket.

But the top prosecco with a score of 78% was the Spar Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG, which is currently down to £10 a bottle from its usual price of £12.

The experts said it has “pleasant balance” and a “meaty, savoury style”.

Tip of the week

Use Cashback websites, advises Helen Dewdney, The Complaining Cow.

Sites like Topcashback, Quidco, Free Fivers, Imutual, Give or Take all provide cashback when you go through their sites and make purchases from the stores listed.

Check them all, as they have different retailers and different percentages, she points out. Do it before filling your online baskets so you’re all set to go.

Most of the sites have apps so you can check while you’re out shopping when you see a bargain and can order and get it delivered instead and benefit from the cashback.
