Free speech advocates fight local vending laws

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — When it comes to the street vendor debate in San Diego, most of the attention has been focused on illegal food vendors. But there’s another class of vendors that doesn’t sell food; instead, they sell art, politics and religion — all things that are traditionally protected as free speech under the First Amendment.

In an effort to appease free speech groups, the City of San Diego is designating space for such free speech vendors by installing eight-feet by four-feet areas in parks across town.

But one advocate says free speech in a box is not really free speech or equal protection under law.
