Free skin cancer screening coming up at Arnot Health

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Arnot Health is offering free skin cancer screenings to the public on Melanoma Monday.

Patients who do not currently have a dermatologist are invited to the Falck Cancer Center, located at 600 Roe Ave., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 6 for the free screening. Dermatology and plastic surgery providers will be at the event to examine the attendees and let them know if they have any skin abnormalities that need to be further investigated.

Those interested in being checked for skin cancer at this event will need to register in advance by calling 607-737-4499 so time slots can be allocated based on the number of attendees.

Melanoma Monday takes place on the first Monday of May, which is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, each year. The purpose of Melanoma Monday is to raise awareness of skin cancer and encourage people to check for possible signs of skin cancer. Melanoma is highly treatable when it’s detected early.

According to Arnot Health, more than 100,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. The risk of developing melanoma increases with age, and the average age people of people who are diagnosed with it is 66. Despite this, people can develop melanoma at any age, and it’s not uncommon for people under the age of 30 to develop melanoma. Melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults, and it’s especially common in young women.
