Free gifts await first customers on opening weekend at new Coast department store

The first of two new Burlington department stores in South Mississippi is about to open at The Promenade in D’Iberville.

A ribbon cutting at the D’Iberville store is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. on Friday, March 22. The store is in the former Bed, Bath & Beyond store, near Kohl’s.

The Pascagoula store will open this spring, the company said. It’s under construction on U.S. 90 at the former KMart site that is west of Walmart and east of Lowe’s.

To draw customers in, the first 100 customers 18 and older in line when the D’Iberville store opens at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday will get a $10 gift card toward their purchase. On Sunday, free Burlington umbrellas will be handed to people while supplies last and with no purchase necessary.

At the ribbon-cutting, Burlington will donate $5,000 to a local high school through their partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org.

In-person shopping

When The Promenade shopping and dining complex opened in 2009, South Mississippi gained its first major shopping center after Hurricane Katrina and anchor stores like Target, Kohl’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Marshalls.

The opening of national retail stores in South Mississippi and throughout the country slowed as online shopping grew. These new stores in D’Iberville and Pascagoula, where T.J. Maxx, Rack Room Shoes and 5 Below are opening near Burlington, suggest shoppers still want brick and mortar stores where they can touch and try on products.

Burlington has 1,000 stores nationwide, but these are the first two in South Mississippi.

“Our goal is to continue to offer area residents low prices on brand name merchandise for the entire family and home,” said Michael O’Sullivan, CEO of Burlington Stores. “We’re continuing to expand our footprint across the country and are excited to be opening a new store in D’lberville.”

The D’Iberville store will be open late every night to accommodate shoppers. Hours are Sunday from 9 a.m.-11 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to midnight.

What Burlington’s about
