Frederick County residents should avoid these areas due to sewage overflow from rain

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Frederick County Health Department advised residents to avoid several places around the county due to sewage overflow which was a result of recent rainfall.

Signs will be placed around the overflow areas and the waters should be avoided for the next two weeks until April 17 and April 18.

The four places are located at:

  1. Emmitsburg: Mount St. Mary’s University campus on the east side of Rt. 15 in the waters from Saint Mary Run to Toms Creek to the Monocacy River.

  2. Frederick: the Monocacy River from Rt 144 to Rt 80 or Fingerboard Rd, from Pinecliff Park to Buckeystown Park.

  3. Thurmont: from the Thurmont Wastewater Treatment Plant at 96 East Moser Rd into Big Hunting Creek to Blacks Mill Road.

  4. Middletown: At the Cone Branch Pump Station at 7317 Old Middletown Road. Cone Branch Creek should be avoided from the pump station down to Bennies Hill Road.

Swimming in waters with an overflow of sewage should be avoided. If you do come come into contact with the affected water, make sure to wash thoroughly with warm water and soap, especially before eating.

Pet owners should also keep their pets away from the waters.

Boating and fishing will still be allowed. Fish may still be safe to eat if it is cleaned, scaled and cooked.

Rivers that have reached flood levels should be avoided for safety and potential contamination.
