Frederick boys hoops wins first title since 1982

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (DC News Now) — On Saturday night, for the first time in 42 years, the Frederick high school boys basketball team hoisted a state championship trophy.

“It’s all about these young men sitting to my right, sitting to my left, in that locker room. I’m from Frederick born and raised,” Frederick boys basketball head coach Emonte Hill said. “So obviously I know the history, know some of the guys, family members to me, mentors to me that were on that team [in 1982.]”

After catching fire in the first quarter of their game against Whitman, the Cadets didn’t look back, dominating the Vikings in a 74-49 win.

“Words can’t express the way I’m feeling right now. All the work, all the time we put in,” Frederick senior guard Ivan Quijada said. “The six AMs, the miles we’ve ran. It just all paid off for tonight and tonight it showed. These boys, all these guys, I love them to death.”

Frederick finished the season 24-4, winning the last 14 games of the season. Whitman finishes the season with a 21-6 record.
