Fraternity endowment fund establishes the Lynn Welker scholarship at Muskingum University

NEW CONCORD – The Kappa Sigma Fraternity Endowment Fund recently established a scholarship in honor of member Lynn M. Welker of Muskingum University.

The Lynn M. Welker Scholarship-Leadership Award will provide $1,000 annually to an undergraduate of Theta-Omicron at Muskingum University.

The fundraising effort by members of the local chapter was part of Kappa Sigma’s annual Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving. This year, Kappa Sigma Fraternity added a new recognition option to create named scholarships in honor of some of Kappa Sigma’s most beloved members, such as Welker.

Welker is a 1980 initiate of the Theta-Omicron Chapter at Muskingum. He graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in history and a minor in music. Welker is self-employed as the owner of Margaret Lane Antiques, his family business founded in New Concord in 1954. Welker served as the alumnus adviser to the Theta-Omicron Chapter for 23 years from 1983 to 2006.

Welker was the first recipient of the chapter’s Distinguished Service Commendation in April 2019. He was bestowed the title of Theta-Omicron Alumnus Adviser Emeritus in April 2022. Welker is designated inductee number one into the Theta-Omicron Chapter Alumni Hall of Fame and our Friend and Adviser for a Lifetime.

Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving was established in 2015 to raise funds for the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund’s Donald C. Dilley Jr. Scholarship-Leadership Awards program. Scholarship-Leadership Awards are given to qualifying Kappa Sigma undergraduate members each year on Founders Day. The fundraising event is named after Kappa Sigma’s first national board president, Stephen Alonzo Jackson.

In 2024, for the first time, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity raised more than $1.26 million during its Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving. Over three days, the record-breaking amount was donated by 18,316 gifts from dedicated benefactors. As a result, 17 newly named scholarship-leadership awards will be awarded annually in perpetuity.
