Frail Burt Reynolds Arrives In New York For Late Show Interview

Cutting an increasingly frail figure, Burt Reynold arrived in New York yesterday for an interview on Stephen Colbert’s ‘The Late Show’.

Still using a cane to walk, the 79-year-old star hit the studio as part of his press rounds for new memoir 'But Enough About Me’.

Former Hollywood macho man Reynolds has been suffering ill health for many years now, with back surgery in 2009 leaving him addicted to pain killers.

But he’s been more active in recent weeks, after being notably absent from the public eye for several years before that.

And thanks to the nature of his memoirs, he’s been talking about his past and career in interviews, telling Vanity Fair that one of his biggest regrets was the way his relationship with Sally Field ended up, describing her as 'the love of my life’.

“I miss her terribly,” he told the magazine. “Even now, it’s hard on me. I don’t know why I was so stupid.

“Men are like that, you know. You find the perfect person, and then you do everything you can to screw it up.”

He added that he would often warn women away from him.

“They always say, 'I’ll be able to handle it’.” he said. “They can’t handle it. And they don’t understand what they’ve done. And it’s not them. It’s me.”

Reynolds was last in the headlines when he auctioned off his huge collection of memorabilia, including the famous Pontiac from his 'Smokey and the Bandit’ movies, as well as countless other items from his life in the movies.

Rumours at the time suggested that the actor was broke, and was selling the collection to raise money, but he denied such talk.

“I am simply selling some of my memorabilia that I have enjoyed for so many years but do not have use nor room for them anymore,” he said.

“Quite frankly, I am sick of so many pictures of myself in my own home.”

He also broached the matter in the Vanity Fair interview, saying: “I’ve lost more money than is possible because I just haven’t watched it. I’ve still done well in terms of owning property and things like that.

“But I haven’t been somebody who’s been smart about his money. There are a couple of actors who are quite brilliant with the way they’ve handled their money. But they’re not very good actors.”

Asked if the auction was set up because he is broke, he added: “That p***es me off. That’s one of the rare things that does p*** me off. I’m not bankrupt, by any means. I’m not even worried about it.”
