Fourth of July truck fire in Grand Forks caused by sparks from fireworks

Jul. 6—The Grand Forks Fire Department has determined that a July 4 vehicle fire was caused by sparks from fireworks.

The fire occurred on Sunday evening, near the intersection of South Washington Street and 47th Avenue South. A driver was transporting used and unused fireworks in the bed of a pickup. The fireworks caught fire from fallout sparks from fireworks being set off south of city limits, as the driver headed into town. The fire then spread to the rest of the pickup until it was extinguished by GFFD personnel.

No one was injured in the incident and the fire was contained to the pickup. The GFFD has classified the fire as accidental.

Fire department officials stress that fireworks are illegal within the city limits of Grand Forks and should not be used near roadways, structures or combustible materials.
