Four US Marines are feared dead after their helicopter crashed during a routine training exercise in California.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing reportedly crashed near El Centro around 2.35 pm on Tuesday.

The four crew members on board were presumed to have been killed, according to a Marines statement emailed to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Marine officials have not yet named the crew’s squadron and the base from which it flew.

The helicopter that crashed, one of the largest in the world, is designed to lift heavy objects, such as military vehicles and cargo from ship to shore and to high terrain, according to manufacturer Lockheed Martin.
