Four dead, one hospitalized after head-on crash in Fallbrook

UPDATE: Oakland political leaders killed in SR-76 crash

FALLBROOK, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Four people are dead and one person was hospitalized following a fiery, three-vehicle crash in Fallbrook late Friday night, according to California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 11:18 p.m. on State Route 76 near Horse Ranch Creek Road.

According to CHP, an unidentified individual driving a silver Chrysler 300 eastbound had veered to the left and into incoming traffic, colliding head-on with a westbound Jeep Gladiator. The impact then caused a third vehicle, a Toyota Camry also traveling west, to side-swipe the Jeep.

Four people — the drivers of the Jeep and Chrysler, as well as two adult passengers of the Jeep — sustained fatal injuries in the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said.

A third adult passenger of the Jeep was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of “major injuries.” Their current condition is unknown.

The deceased driver of the Jeep was identified by authorities as a 58-year-old man. No information was available about the other people who died in the crash, and no other injuries were reported by CHP.

Additional details about what led up to the crash remain unknown, including whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. An investigation by CHP remains ongoing.

Authorities were on scene for upwards of six hours Saturday while crews worked to clean up the scene. Road closures were in place during that time, but all were lifted just after 5:30 a.m.

Anyone with information about the crash that could help the investigation is asked to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at 760-643-3400.
