Four children were seriously injured after falling through the roof of a sports centre in southern Germany on Saturday, police said.

Police said they were informed that the four children, aged 13, had climbed onto the roof of a sports hall in Remshalden, some 20 kilometres east of Stuttgart, at about 8:20 pm (1820 GMT).

A spokesman for the Aalen police headquarters said the children were believed to have fallen about seven metres down through the skylight of the roof while playing. They were taken to hospital by helicopter.

Police were investigating why and how they climbed onto the roof, a statement continued.

Three helicopters, two police patrols, 40 firefighters on seven vehicles and 13 ambulances with two emergency doctors were involved in the rescue operation.
