Four charged after illegal gambling investigation in Anson County: Sheriff

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Four people have been arrested after deputies found drugs and firearms while investigating an illegal gambling operation, according to the Anson County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday, April 12, deputies from Anson and Richmond counties used search warrants at the Lilesville Game Room on West Wall Street, along with a residence at 100 Fellowship Drive in Hamlet, N.C.

During the search, deputies found firearms, drugs and cash, officials said.

67-year-old Monir Gorgy Scafik Dawoud, 54-year-old David Lee Painter and 52-year-old Denise Ann Painter were all booked in the Anson County Jail under a $5,000 secure bond for felony operating more than five video gaming machines. All have a court date set for May 6, 2024, in Anson County District Court.

Mary Christal Cummings, 53, was booked into the Anson County Jail under a $10,000 secure bond for the charges of:

  • Felony possession of methamphetamine

  • Felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance

  • Misdemeanor possession of marijuana

Her first court date is also set for May 6, 2024, in Anson County District Court.
