Foundation gets $1.8M grant for workforce development in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Split Second Foundation Inc. in New Orleans has been awarded a $1.8 million grant to improve workforce development efforts.

The grant comes from the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) and will be used to renovate the existing commercial space in support of the Center for Health and Job Development.

The center will provide care for those with disabilities and workforce training in health care and rehabilitation careers.

“President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is about ensuring that all communities have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in today’s economy,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “America’s workers are the source of our country’s innovation and competitiveness, and this EDA grant will support workforce training for a historically underserved population, spurring hundreds of jobs that will contribute to New Orleans having a stronger, more dynamic regional economy.”

The EDA’s funds will be matched with $450,000 of local funds, according to EDA officials.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo said the investment in the foundation will support healthcare needs, develop critical jobs and create a resilient economy.

Funding for the project comes under the Disaster Relief Supplement Appropriation Act 2023, which provided EDA with $483 million in additional Economic Adjustment Assistance Program funds for disaster relief and recovery.
