Fort Towson Historic Site to host eclipse watch party

FORT TOWSON, Okla. (KFOR) — Looking for a spot to view the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8? The Fort Towson Historic Site will be putting on an eclipse watch party from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., the day of the solar eclipse.

The price at the gate for the event will cost $10 per person, cash only. If you are military personnel, an Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) member, or children under the age of six, there will be no charge to get into the event.

Fort Towson is expected to see 3 minutes and 43 seconds of totality according to NASA. The time that it is expected to take place in the area is from 1:45 p.m. and 1:50 p.m.

Guests will have the opportunity to spend the day exploring the site and to learn about Fort Towson’s history. A period encampment will be included with 1840s-era tents and historians dressed in uniform to give history demonstrations.

Fort Towson was established in 1824 during quell conflicts of Native American peoples and settlers. The historic site was also used as an important outpost during the Mexican- American War of 1846, for U.S. forces.

Solar eclipse glasses will be available to purchase but will only be available while supplies last. Gates will open from 8 a.m. until noon time on April 8 and will be closed from noon until 2:30 p.m. to allow no interruption for those attending the event.

The site will be open everyday between Tuesday, April 2, and Saturday, April 13 in order to assist those that are traveling to the area for the event.
