FORT SCOTT, KS – A very small portion of high school athletes have the opportunity to compete in the state tournament. Former Fort Scott boys basketball players Brian Comstock, Danny Brown, Jason Gorman, and Pechone Stepps all got to experience it back in 1991.

“We talked about going to the state tournament. We still talk about it today like it just happened. It’s been 30 plus years, so it’s a it’s a memorable experience that not a lot of people get to do,” said Brian Comstock.

“When we were a number one team most of the year it was just such a incredible feeling to get to experience that, and I think we’re all the same and that we wanted to have our kids be able to experience that,” said Danny Brown.

Now in 2024, the Fort Scott lady tigers are heading to state as the two seed, and some of these players share the same last name as the state championship team in 1991.

Kylee Comstock, Abbie Gorman, and Allie Brown are the daughters of Brian Comstock, Jason Gorman and Danny Brown.

“We really got to that final moment, and we haven’t been able to get over that hump, but we finally, finally did it. It’s just been super exciting to be able to follow the footsteps of our parents.”

Former player Pechone Stepps is the lady tigers coach, mentoring his former teammates daughters.

We’ve been friends since the second grade. You automatically get three new assistants, you know, all the time. But you know what they say, it’s from the heart, and they bleed Tiger Red too,” said Stepps.

The fathers said while they know the tournament can be a nervous time for their daughters, they think they’re handling the pressure really well.

“I think she does a good job of managing her nerves,” said Gorman.

“Sometimes it’s the older you get, the better your nerves are, and you feel more confident. I’ve been proud of her for being able to hang in there.”
