Fort Novosel Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Barracks

Fort Novosel and the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for their newest advanced individual training barracks on Wednesday morning.

Local elected officials and military personnel gathered as officials dug their shovels into the dirt, laying the foundation for what military personnel say will be instrumental for them and the region.

“A project like this is super important, and we focus on the quality of life and taking care of soldiers and families. That’s what the wiregrass community does for us here,” said Major General Michael C. McCurry.

The project will include a two-story, 76,000-square-foot barracks facility that will house 320 soldiers. It will also include a company-operations facility.

Costing an initial amount of $72 million, mccurry estimates the final cost will be over $100 million.

It will be the first barracks facility constructed on the base since 1998.

According to the army, the project comes as part of a plan to provide better quality of life services for those at the base, which includes giving them more living space.

The new facility will also improve construction standards.

McCurry said, “Any time we can improve the quality of life of our soldiers, that’s important, and that’s what this is all about.”
