Former Vikings QB Nate Stanley files injury grievance against team

Former Vikings quarterback Nate Stanley has filed an injury grievance against the team, sources said.

Stanley, a Menomonie, Wis., native, was waived by the Vikings on July 19, a week before the start of training camp. Sources say Stanley contends he was let go while having a nerve injury that affects his leg and foot, and that he should receive payment from the Vikings because it is related to football.

Due to his grievance, sources said Thursday that the NFL has placed a $172,000 amount on Minnesota’s salary cap while the issue is being investigated. That is 40 percent of the $420,000 injury split in Stanley’s contract that he would be entitled to if it were ruled he has an injury making him unable to play in the 2022 season.

Stanley was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Iowa and spent his rookie year on the practice squad. He was on injured reserve all of last season due to a back injury that required surgery in October.

Stanley took part in 2022 spring drills with the Vikings, and sources say he has fully healed from his back injury. However, sources say that after spring drills ended June 8, Stanley developed a nerve condition that affected his leg and at one point resulted in him not having feeling in his foot. Sources say Stanley contends he then was waived by the Vikings when he was hurt.

Stanley could not be reached for comment. The Vikings did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

After Stanley was let go, the Vikings headed into training camp with three quarterbacks — starter Kirk Cousins and backups Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion. On Aug. 22, they acquired another quarterback, Nick Mullins, who made the 53-man roster as the backup to Cousins.

Mond and Mannion both were waived Tuesday, with Mond being claimed by Cleveland and Mannion signing with Seattle’s practice squad. The Vikings are now looking for a quarterback for their practice squad.
