Former Sumter County Detention Officer arrested on drug smuggling charges

AMERICUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A former Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Detention Officer was arrested on Monday, May 20, in an attempt to smuggle illegal drugs into the jail.

Yakeema Shantrell Mercer was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, items prohibited by inmates, and identity fraud. Mercer turned herself in and was released on bond.

According to SCSO, Mercer had two accomplices.

Camry Kemarurius May was being held at the Sumter County Jail on murder charges. After these new charges against him, he is being transferred to a different holding facility.

SCSO said the third accomplice, Quintavious Lamontae Williams, is still at large.
