Former Summit Crossing Community Church employee charged with soliciting a child

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — A former Summit Crossing Community Church employee was charged after Madison City Police say he electronically solicited a child.

According to the Madison Police Department (MPD), 49-year-old David Mark Sellers was arrested and taken to the Madison County Jail.

Sellers’s title at the church was Director for Missional Communities, according to the church’s website and social media.

Summit Crossing Community Church told News 19 that on May 13, church leadership became aware that an employee had been sending sexually inappropriate and explicit text messages to a teenager.

The next morning they filed a report with Alabama DHR and local law enforcement and waited to take disciplinary action at the request of law enforcement. Upon Sellers’ arrest, the church fired him and indefinitely suspended him from returning to church property or events.

“We are deeply grieved for those who have experienced this sinful behavior by one of our employees, and grateful to the family that initially came forward to report it. We remain in contact with them and are following their wishes regarding how we can support them moving forward,” said the church in a statement to News 19. “We are also saddened by the impact this will have on the former employee’s family and are committed to supporting and caring for them in the days ahead.”

The department said it searched Sellers’ home in Madison yesterday, as well as an office at the church.

The case is still under investigation but Madison Police say that Summit Crossing Community Church’s leadership has been cooperative and instrumental throughout the situation.

If you have any information about the case, MPD says to contact them at tellmpd@madisonal.gov.
