BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Former Speaker of the House and Bakersfield Congressman Kevin McCarthy spoke out commenting about his ouster as Speaker during an appearance on C-SPAN.

“I’ll give you the truth why I’m not speaker,” McCarthy said. “It’s because one person, a member of Congress, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old … An ethics complaint that started before I ever became speaker and that’s illegal and I’m not gonna get in the middle.”

“Did he do it or not? I don’t know. But ethics is looking at it. There’s other people in jail because of it, and he wanted me to influence it,” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said.

McCarthy was referring to Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who became the subject of a House ethics investigation back in 2021. Gaetz then began the process for removing McCarthy as Speaker.

Gaetz was accused of paying for sex with underage women. In February of last year, prosecutors said they would not issue charges.
