Former SLHS teacher sentenced to 90 days in sex abuse case

May 22—A former South Laurel High School teacher has begun serving 90 days in jail for having sexual contact with a 16-year-old in 2021.

Tim G. Thompson, 51, was indicted in October 2022 on four counts of first-degree sexual abuse for actions with a then 16-year-old victim. The incidents allegedly took place in late 2021.

Thompson entered into a plea agreement to one count of first-degree sexual abuse in March, which called for a sentence of four years in prison, with that sentence probated for three years if Thompson serves 90 days in jail. The plea agreement also specified that Thompson register as a sex offender and remain on that registry for 20 years.

Thompson appeared before Laurel Circuit Judge Michael O. Caperton on Wednesday, May 15 for formal sentencing. He was ordered to report to court officials on Friday, May 17, at 2 p.m. Jail records show that Thompson was booked into the jail at 3:46 p.m.

When the allegations arose, Thompson was suspended in his role as a teacher and was later terminated.
