Former skydiving center to be transformed into affordable housing

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A former building known as the Skydiving Center in downtown San Diego has been chosen as a site for more affordable housing.

On Wednesday, Father Joe’s Villages was selected to lead the redevelopment of the site at 1401 Imperial Ave., a former skydiving facility that is currently operating as a homelessness response center owned by the city of San Diego, according to a release Thursday.

The project is set to add 176 affordable housing units in the East Village near Father Joe’s Villages’ campus, which is located just a block away at 1501 Imperial Ave.

“We are committed to creating a community that residents are proud to call home, supporting the city’s broader vision for growth and providing diverse living options for residents,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, the president and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages.

The announcement came after the city started a months-long process to gather proposals from organizations and individuals interested in buying and redeveloping the property.

According to Father Joe’s Villages, the nonprofit plans to transform the 15-story building into a facility that will give future residents access to wrap-around services such as physical and behavioral health care, social services and resources for employment.

The goal is to help people transition out of homelessness and into stable housing.
