Former Shrewsbury Christmas Tree Shops may become trampoline park, town manager says

SHREWSBURY — The Shrewsbury Select Board has received a building permit request to transform the former Christmas Tree Shops location along Route 9 into a trampoline park.

Town manager Kevin Mizikar said that was "good news" at this past Tuesday's Select Board meeting, adding it would be beneficial for Olde Shrewsbury Village, the shopping center that once housed the now-closed Christmas Tree Shops.

"We're all interested in seeing that plaza getting developed and getting back to commercial use," Mizikar said, in a recording of the meeting. "So that's good news that it's such a quick turnaround."

If the permit is approved, 40,000 square feet of the former Christmas Tree Shops would be converted into a "trampoline business," Mizikar said.

The Worcester Registry of Deeds shows that 100 Boston Turnpike LLC was bought by a company owned by Zi Qian Zhang of Barrington, Rhode Island. Zhang purchased the shopping center for $13.6 million in March.

Zhang's company, Fall River-based JZ Real Estate, owns nearly 20 trampoline parks on the east coast.

The Christmas Tree Shops in Olde Shrewsbury Village operated on the lot for over 35 years. The Shrewsbury location was one of the last Christmas Tree Shops; it closed in August after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May.

According to the Shrewsbury town website, Olde Shrewsbury Village was estimated to be worth $15,943,200, roughly $2.3 million more than Zhang's purchase.
