Former pharmacy technician at CT hospital pleads guilty to stealing, using opioids

A former pharmacy technician at a Connecticut hospital has pleaded guilty to stealing a portion of an opioid solution meant for patient use and using it for herself before replacing it with saline.

Tiffany Moss, 34, of Montville waived her right to be indicted and entered a plea during a hearing Tuesday in Bridgeport federal court, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.

Federal officials said she pleaded guilty to tampering with a consumer product.

According to officials, Moss worked at Backus Hospital in Norwich when she used her employee ID badge to access a secure storage area of the facility on Jan. 11. She removed three bags of a hydromorphone solution and took a portion of the pain medication from each bag for her own use, according to officials.

Moss then replaced what she took with a saline solution and returned the bags to be used for patients, federal officials said.

Moss is free on a $50,000 bond while she awaits sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled. She could face up to 10 years in prison, officials said.

While she is free on bond, Moss has been ordered not to work anywhere that would give her access to narcotics.
