Former NFL star wanted by police in Canada for fraud; cut off GPS monitor

ONTARIO, Canada (WGHP) — A former NFL defensive back is wanted by police in Canada after he allegedly failed to show up for a court date and his GPS monitor went offline, according to the Durham Regional Police Service.

34-year-old Darryl Frank Skrine is wanted by police on charges of failure to appear and failure to comply with a release order.

Skrine is better known by the name Buster Skrine, which is what he went by during his NFL career.

Police say that Skrine was initially arrested at the Pearson International Airport in Canada in Aug. 2023 for “numerous fraud-related charges.”

On April 9, Skrine was transferred from a correctional facility in Ontario to a correctional center in Saskatchewan to face additional fraud charges.

Skrine was granted bail from the Saskatchewan facility on April 12 on the condition he abide by a GPS monitoring program and return to court in the Durham Region attend court on Monday.

Police say that Skrine failed to attend his Monday court date and that his GPS monitor has since gone offline.

Skrine was selected by the Cleveland Browns in Round 5 of the 2011 NFL Draft and had a 10-year NFL career.

After spending four seasons with the Browns, Skrine signed a four-year-$25-million contract with the New York Jets in 2015, according to Spotrac. That deal included a $5 million signing bonus and $13 million in guarantees.

After completing that four-year deal with the Jets, Skrine signed a 3-year-$16.5 million contract with the Chicago Bears in 2019. That deal included a $5.5 million signing bonus and $8.5 million in guarantees.

Skrine was released by the Bears in 2021 and spent the 2021 season with the San Franciso 49ers and Tennessee Titans before retiring in 2022.

Spotrac reports that Skrine earned over $40 million during his NFL career.
