Former NBA player Rasual Butler had drugs, alcohol in system during crash
Former NBA player Rasual Butler had drugs and alcohol in his system during a car crash that killed him and his wife, the Indianapolis Star reported Friday after receiving a copy of the autopsy report.
The report, released by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, revealed that Butler had alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine and Oxycodone in his system during the crash. There was also an empty box of Don Julio tequila in the back seat.
Butler, 38, was driving “two to three times” faster than the speed limit in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles on January 31 when he “lost control of his Range Rover around 2 a.m., struck a parking meter and slammed into a wall.” Both Butler and his wife, Leah LaBelle — who was a contestant on “American Idol” in 2004 — were pronounced dead at the scene.
Butler played in the NBA for 13 seasons for nine different teams, most notably with the Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets and San Antonio Spurs. The 6-foot-7 big man was drafted in the second round of the 2002 NBA draft by the Heat after spending four years at LaSalle University.
He also played in the inaugural season of Ice Cube’s BIG3 summer 3-on-3 league, where he averaged 11.8 points and nearly four rebounds in 21.2 minutes per game.
