Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville was left embarrassed on Monday as he was forced to wear a Liverpool shirt live on air.

Neville, 43, suffered the humiliation of donning his fierce rivals’ kit live on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football after losing a pre-season bet with co-analyst Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool legend Carragher beat his counterpart in a penalty shootout and Neville begrudgingly accepted after seemingly attempting to pull out of the dare.

The former right-back did, though, wear his shirt back-to-front in an attempt to avoid donning the Liverpool badge.

And the Istanbul 2005 Champions League winner set up his colleague with a shirt from Xherdan Shaqiri – the current incumbent of the number 23 shirt, Carragher’s former number.

Switzerland winger Shaqiri even signed the shirt – with a cheeky message for Neville, who criticised his play for his country during the World Cup in Russia.

It read: “To my no.1 fan Gary, please don’t track back – SORRY – please don’t backtrack on this bet.”

But the former Red Devil – and Class of ’99 man – did not go down without a fight, ensuring Carragher came good on his forfeit to wear a United shirt.

That came after an alleged earlier bet in which the pair argued over former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho’s capabilities – with Carragher backing the Brazilian to score 15 goals in a season.

Meanwhile Liverpool’s head of supporter liaison Tony Barrett popped up on Twitter to suggest the shirts could go to a good cause.

Carragher agreed that the tops could go to foodbank charities run by both sets of supporters as a suitable way to end the bet.
