Former La Vergne police chief sues city after sex scandal
LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The former police chief of the La Vergne Police Department during a sex scandal is now suing the city for reinstatement to his position and back pay.
Five officers were fired after allegedly having sex on and off duty with each other, sending nude photos of themselves to other officers, failing to disclose relations to Human Resources and lying about their actions during the investigation, according to city documents.

Burrell “Chip” Davis was initially put on administrative leave in February 2023 before he was fired. Third-party investigators concluded Davis “was aware of the sexual misconduct within his department and never reported or disciplined any of the officers involved.” The investigator also concluded Davis impeded the initial investigation into sexual misconduct.

In the lawsuit, Davis claims he was racially discriminated against, fired while other white supervisors were not disciplined, and he is entitled to damages.

Davis is seeking:
A jury trial
Back pay and damages for lost benefits, insurance and actual damages,
Reinstatement and/or front pay
Compensatory damages for embarrassment, humiliation, stress, anxiety, inconvenience and loss of enjoyment of life
Liquidated damages
Punitive damages
Attorney’s fees and expenses
Prejudgment interest and, if applicable, post-judgment interest
Such other and further legal and equitable relief to which he may be entitled under TITLE VII, the Tennessee Human Rights Act and any other statutory or common law.
