HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Hampton University community is mourning the loss of the university’s 10th president, Dr. Roy Hudson.

Hudson, a Tennessee native and Air Force veteran, died last week at the age of 93, according to his obituary.

He served as Hampton’s president from 1970 to 1976 when it was called Hampton Institute, and “played a significant role in shaping the institution’s history and fostering its growth,” current HU President Darrell K. Williams wrote in a statement.

“During his tenure, President Hudson exhibited a strong commitment to academic excellence and student success. He spearheaded initiatives that expanded educational opportunities and enhanced the quality of education at Hampton University,” Hudson said. “His visionary leadership laid the foundation for the institution’s continued progress and development.”
