Former funeral home is now a coffee house

You have to have a sense of humor to transform a funeral home into a coffee house. The Undergrounds Coffee House and Roaster on South Park in the Old First Ward has made the most of it's former existence as a mortuary. You'll find the "calling hours" on the front door, there's a "cremation station" where you can get cream for your coffee, a skull and skeleton motif and even the original guest registry stand. Sara Heidinger grew up in the neighborhood. Before she and her partners created this cozy coffee place, Sara had paid her respects here, saying "I've been to plenty of wakes here and a bunch of my friends have, but we often get people that come in and show you you this is where grandpa was laid out and that's part of the reason we decided to pay homage to what was here before us." They roast their own beans, offer a full menu of breakfasts, salads and sandwiches and also have a mug club. You can find more information at their website.
