Former East Henderson High and Dana Elementary principal 'Moon' Mullins dies

On April 6 at Bethel Wesleyan Church, former East Henderson High School and Dana Elementary School principal Carroll Edward "Moon" Mullins was laid to rest.

Mullins, who had a 30-year career with Henderson County Public Schools, died on March 29 at the age of 84.

According to his obituary from Shuler Funeral Home, Mullins was a native of Clintwood, Virginia. After graduating from Clintwood High School, he joined the U.S. Army and participated in football, baseball and boxing, becoming a golden gloves boxer for the Army, the obituary said.

He went on to play quarterback for Lees-McRae College and Mars Hills University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in education. He received his master’s degree from Western Carolina University and also completed the Principal’s Executive Program at UNC Chapel Hill.

Mullins began his career in education at West Henderson High School, where he coached and later became the school's vice principal. In 1985 he was asked to take over as principal at Dana Elementary, where he stayed until 1990, when he accepted the role as principal at East Henderson High School. He remained there until his retirement in 2000.

He was also a longtime realtor with Beverly-Hanks Realty.

According to his obituary, when he wasn’t teaching or coaching, Mullins spent much of his free time at Etowah Valley Golf & Resort, playing golf. He taught Sunday School and was a deacon at Shaws Creek Baptist Church and later became an active member of Bethel Wesleyan Church. He was also a volunteer with the Hendersonville Lions Club.

The family has requested memorials be sent to East Henderson High School's athletics program or the Henderson County Humane Society.
