Former corrections officer pleads guilty to insurance fraud

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A former state corrections officer has pleaded guilty to insurance fraud-related charges, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

56-year-old Charles Epps, II, of Buffalo, admitted to fraudulently collecting more than $50,000 in benefits while working as a bus operator. He claimed that he was unable to work due to an injury he suffered in July 2020 while working as a corrections officer.

He was falsely reporting his employment status between August 2021 and November 2022.

He pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree insurance fraud and one count of third-degree grand larceny. As part of the plea, he will pay full restitution of $35,544.67 to the New York State Insurance Fund and $16,907.40 to the Social Security Administration, for a total of $52,452.07.

He faces up to seven years in prison when he is sentenced on May 22. He was released on his own recognizance.
