Former correctional officer sentenced to prison for contraband crime

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — A man was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for providing contraband to an inmate of a federal prison.

According to court documents, Cody Adam Bays, 32, of Beaver was a correctional officer at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Beckley. Between November 7, 2022, and February 14, 2023, Bays was giving contraband to the inmates at the prison.

Bays admitted that he gave different substances to inmates, which included marijuana, synthetic marijuana, tobacco, and suboxone. He tried to bring in fentanyl into the prison, but first tried some of it, then immediately overdosed.

In total, Bays made $20,800 from giving contraband to inmates in the prison. He made $5,000 from the suboxone, $4,000 from the fentanyl, $3,500 from the synthetic marijuana and $2,000 from the marijuana. Bays would get payments by cash or money through phone applications.

Due to his actions, Bays became a part of a multi-state drug trafficking criminal enterprise that was made up of electronic money transfers that showed he was selling drugs within a federal prison system.
